What Do I Need for a Full Day of Sledding?
When the snow calls, you've got to answer! With all the snow piling up around the province, now is the perfect time to hit the trails. Whether you’re ditch banging or heading up to the mountains, knowing what to pack in your gear bag is essential. You might be asking yourself: What Do I Need for a Full Day of Sledding? We’ve got a guide for you!
The Difference Maker:
Sledding is about more than just the machine; it's about being prepared. Following this guide will ensure you're ready for any situation, so when the snow calls you can spend your energy where it counts.
What do I need to pack for clothing, food, and water?
Your monosuit, boots, helmet, and gloves, are just the outer shell. You'll need layers of protection, plus fuel to keep you going:
- An extra face mask for wind protection, extra socks, and insulated gloves
- Think about bringing an extra pair of goggles. When you get stuck and start working hard to dig out, your first set will fog up from the heat.
- A fully insulated water bottle; standard plastic bottles turn into ice blocks by noon in -15°C weather.
- Non-perishable snacks that are lightweight, healthy, and easy to pack: bags of trail mix, beef jerky, protein bars, dried fruit, roasted chickpeas, applesauce.
What are my safety and emergency essentials?
Stocking up on these essentials is key to your success. Pack for the worst and hope for the best. Include these in your pack whenever you ride:
- First aid kit
- Emergency blanket or bivy sack
- Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
- Whistle for signaling
- Avalanche safety gear
How can I stay in touch with the outside world?
Staying in contact with the outside world when you’re in your sledding bubble is key, not only for safety, but also to ensure you can find the best trails to enjoy your day in the snow. Keep these items in mind when heading out to ride:
- Offline maps or GPS
- Portable power bank
- Paper map of the trail for back up
- Two-way radio or communicator
What if my sled breaks on the trails?
Don’t get stranded without these items that’ll let you use your energy for more important things, like shredding the trails!
- Extra Fuel
- Multi-tool or small tool kit
- Small shovel
- Zip ties & duct tape
- How do you move a snowmobile that’s stuck without wrecking your back? Ski Pull Straps will be your new best friend!
Follow this guide for your next ride, and you’ll be well-prepared for any situation you encounter. Make sure to always let someone know where you’re sledding, especially if you’re hitting the trails alone.
